April is the month when the garden truly comes to life. The days are getting longer, temperatures are rising, and plants are starting to grow and bloom everywhere. This is the perfect time to get to work in your garden and prepare for a fresh start in spring. But what can you do? Here are the most important gardening tasks for April!
Sowing, planting and pruning
April is the perfect time to further expand your garden with new plants. This month is ideal for sowing—whether it’s vegetables, herbs, or flowers. Keep an eye on the weather forecast and protect young plants from potential night frost.
Haven’t pruned your perennials yet? April is the last chance to prune hedges, standard trees, hydrangeas, roses, and lavender. Important: never prune when there’s still a risk of frost!
Until early May, you can still plant summer-flowering bulbs such as gladioli and begonias. Bulbs that have finished blooming are best left in the ground to fully wither above ground. This way, the nutrients are retained in the bulb, allowing it to bloom beautifully again.
Lawn maintenance for your garden in April
April is also a good month to start fertilizing your lawn. A well-fed lawn not only stays beautifully green, but is also less likely to develop bare spots, which helps prevent weeds and moss from taking over. Consider using a natural fertilizer, such as MAYA’s All-in-one organic fertilizer, for a healthy and strong lawn.
You can also start mowing your lawn in April. Do you have an ornamental lawn? Then keep the grass at a height of 3–4 cm. If your lawn is used more intensively, a height of 5 cm is better. Only mow the grass when it’s dry to avoid damaging your lawn.
Garden maintenance
Not only do your crops and flowers grow quickly, but unfortunately, so does the weed. By removing weeds as soon as possible, you can prevent them from spreading quickly and becoming difficult to control. A weed-free garden ensures that your plants can absorb all the nutrients from the soil.
In April, plants start to grow strongly again, and they could use some help. Fertilize your plants with suitable nutrients, such as MAYA All-in-one organic fertilizer, to keep them strong and healthy.
Do you have empty pots lying around? Clean them and plant flowers that are blooming now, such as geraniums, pansies, forget-me-nots, and begonias. This way, you can easily create a colorful garden or balcony already in April.
